Bila memutar roda waktu ke belakang, banyak sejarah yang mengesankan dari kota tanjungpandan hingga kepada bangungan kuno yang pernah ada. Itulah sebabnya, pertumbuhan kota ini tak terlepas dari sejarah pertimahan di Indonesia.

Berawal misalnya, upaya perebutan biji timah di jaman penjajahan asing banyak memicu sengketa. Pulau Belitung sempat menjadi daerah rebutan Inggris dengan Belanda, saat tratat London, 18 Agustus 1814 ataupun ketika Belanda dan Jepang berebut daerah jajahan tahun 1942-1945.

Setelah berdiri NV Billiton Maaschappy tahun 1860, peradaban barat mulai masuk ke Belitung, terutama di Tanjungpandan. Ketika itu, tanjungpandan tidak hanya didiami oleh orang Eropa, namun mereka juga membangun rumah dan gedung yang bergaya arsektur barat.

Bahkan setelah penambangan timah dipegang NV Gameenchappelijke Minjbouwmaatschappij Billiton (GMB) tahun 1923, pertumbuhan bangunan pesat. Tak hanya rumah petinggi GMB namun bangun boofkantor (kantor pusat), gedung bioskop, rumah sekolah untuk anak pribumi dan rumah sakit untuk pekerja tambang timah asal Tiongkok dibangun GMB di Tanjungpandan.

Paduan budaya Eropa, Cina dan Kebudayaan Melayu Islam menjadi ciri bangunan di Kota tanjungpandan. Diantara bangunan tua di kota adalah Klenteng Ho Tek che, bangunan kantor pusat yang sudah berubah menjadi pusat perbelanjaan, Masjid Jamik Al-Mabrur Tanjungpandan.

Sementara bangunan di Tanjung Gunung yang pernah dipakai KA Rahad, sebagai pusat pemerintahan kemudian menjadi tempat tinggal penguasa colonial Belanda hingga menjelang pengakuan kedaulatan RI tahun 1950.
