TANJUNGPANDAN: Peristiwa demi peristiwa selalu hadir di Bumi Belitung. Setidaknya, di bulan April 1942 silam, Pulau Belitung (Belitung dan Beltim masih bergabung) sempat diduduki tentara Jepang. Namun, begitu kalah dengan sekutu, Jepang angkat kaki dan akhirnya sekitar bulan Agustus/September Jepang meninggalkan Belitung.
Secara sekilas, sebuah buku Sejarah Perjuangan Kemerdekaan RI di Bangka Belitung yang ditulis oleh Husnial Husin Abdullah menyebutkan bahwa pemerintahan jepang sempat menyinggahi pulau Belitung yang diduduki oleh bala tentara jepang pada tanggal 10 April 1942.
Para pegawai N.V. G.M.B berbangsa Belanda diinternir. Sedangkan Demang Belitung Barat Kiai Agus Mohamad Yusuf ditunjuk sebagai penganti wakil asisten residen untuk jangka waktu tiga bulan. Demang ini bertanggungjawab langsung kepada komandan militer jepang.
Sesuai dengan peraturan yang dikeluarkan pemerintah Jepang di Belitung, dibentuk sebuah badan yang bernama Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat (Siu Sangi Kai). Dewan ini setiap tahun harus mengirim 7 orang wakilnya yang ditunjuk pemerintah jepang setempat.
Kemudian dalam permulaan tahun 1945, Jepang membentuk sebuah Badan Kebaktian Rakyat. Badan ini bertugas untuk membantu pemerintahan jepang dalam melaksanakan kewajibannya.
